PA0102 Deil Pear

Most likely a perry pear

Every orchard of long standing has its own Pear Diel, and no one Diel is like another ; neither does any orchardist covet the Diel of his neighbour.”
Journal of horticulture, cottage gardener and country gentlemen, Volume 11 1866

The original names of the other Abbey pears are unknown ; but the people here, have, from time immemorial, given them names corresponding with their nature: such as Choak Pear, Pear Soot, Pear Wash, Pear Deil, and other appellations still more expressive of disgust !

Account of the Orchards in the Neighbourhood of Newburgh (Read 13th September 1814)
